Wrecked on the Bike Path

I'm such a Cat NONE! I wrecked on the bike path! I guess it was not totally my fault but still I went down.

So I was cruising on the bike path to get home after a killer ride. I was grabbing some food and all of a sudden this douche bag sprinted passed me and got in front of me. No big deal, he's trying to pull for me. Then all of a sudden he sits up! Not being anywhere prepared for this, we crossed wheels and I hit the ground.

I wasn't too badly scraped up, but I tore my favorite pair of fleece bib knickers! My handlebars got caught up in this guy's rear wheel so I carefully untangled it. Then this guy who wrecked me totally chewed me out how I was riding dangerously! He did a quick spin of his rear wheel to see if it was damaged and he completely blew it. His wheel was completely trashed and he started yelling and screaming how I owed him a new wheel and it was completely my fault! Wait a minute, he sat up in front of me and caused me to wreck. The guy didn't even go down. And look at me, bar tape all torn up, bloody leg, torn knickers, shift lever twisted, chain derailed.

So this dude picked up some rebar that happened to be laying on the trail and started going after me. Luckily I have super ninja skills and made him run away.

What an asshole.

Quarq CinQo

It's finally here! I dreamed of being able to afford crank based power and now I have it! Not that I really could afford it, had to spend money that was supposed to be saved/invested but it's an investment in my cycling and fitness right?

Only really took it around the block since I had other pressing matters at hand. Data lags a little bit but I guess that is the Garmin's fault, not as instantaneous like the Powertap. I definitly noticed a difference in Q and shifting is not as good as the Campy crank I had on there. Bling Campy Record Crank or Power? I choose power.

Why did I choose the Sram version over the FSA or Rotor? Well because Sram has one bottom bracket. FSA has a billion different bottom brackets. I wanted to be able to pop off the crank and put in on the second bike if and when I needed to. Like switching to a TT bike or cross bike. Also the Sram cranks were the cheapest (can't get WS on the Rotors)

Oh by the way, Campy Record Ultra Torque crank for sale. Need to somewhat offset the cost of the CinQo

Technology Makes Us Stupid

So how many phone numbers do you know off the top of your head?

Me? Home, mom's cell, brother's cell, dad's office, the bike shop, and of course my number (being slowely replaced by business cards). That's a whopping 6 phone numbers (obviously not including 911, 411, 0, etc). I asked Hank at work yesterday and he came up with 4.

I remember back in the day when cell phones were a super luxury and only rich people had them and I knew everyone of my friend's phone number off the top of my head. It was awesome, like your huge cell phone address book but instant and implanted in your brain.

Yes our fancy iPhones, Blackberrys, HTC's, Treos, Winblows Mobile phones make us cool and "connected" but its really amazing how dependent we are on these things. Even your plain jane cell phone has all your contacts in it and you can't contact people without it. Hell, you can even communicate with someone without even talking to them now.

The other day, my iPhone battery died. I seriously considered going home to pick up the charger. Sad...

So how many phone numbers do you know?

Garmin 705 and Wednesday Worlds

The Garmin 705 arrived today and that's half the equation for power. Waiting on the Cranks to get back from Quarq. The crank arm I sent to them arrived there today, so day or two to get it set up, then a 3 day trip via UPS. Should be on Power Monday or Tuesday. Very excited.

We also started up Wednesday Worlds here in Athens. A little cold today and very windy, but we had a decent crew of Carrie, Brad, Curt, John and I. Adam and Hank also showed up but did not partake in the hammerfest portion, they just came out to ride and catch us on the way back in.

This ride was my first really intense ride of the year. A good test of the legs to see if winter training really paid off. I was still a little tired from the previous week's training so I decided not to overdo myself (well we all start off saying that).

The course was Old US33. Ever since they built the new highway, this road has very low traffic and the road conditions are very good. A few flat sections, rollers and a few steeper/longer hills to mix it up. I launched a first attack on a small riser to see how my legs were feeling and to scope out the rest of the crew. I quickly drifted back into the pack on the downhill since I'm no super breakaway specialist and TT for 30 miles solo.Thats when John attacked into Shade and that was the last I saw of him. I waited a little bit too long to try to bridge up to him. I basically tried two solo bridge attempts but finally decided to just forget about it and have more fun in the group.

Coming back in, I attacked a few times but someone was always hard at work to pull me back in. We caught up to Hank and Adam and they joined up adding some fresh legs. As we got closer into town, the attacks came on heavy and once only a few miles to go, the pace really slowed down and the cat and mouse games started. Adam eventually launched a hard attack that splintered the group. I covered and counter attacked and continued on the gradual hill that lead to the city limits. Hank and Curt bridged on and again, I was leading trying to make sure to keep those guys in check. About 500m, Hank attacked and while I responded, I couldn't bring him back in (remember he had fresh legs) . I rolled in shortly after he did. I probably attacked one too many times earlier that cost me at the end. If I had the CinQo, I could definitly look back at the power numbers.

I definitely felt good. My legs felt great and had a lot of snap and power. However I feel I am lacking power for longer durations, especially after I attack.

You know as I was writing this, I was wondering why am I writing in such detail on a training ride. I should really go out and race! Mid-Ohio is this Saturday. I'll see how the legs are feeling Friday and decide then if I want to go.

Quarq Cinqo Saturn

I dropped the big bucks today to buy a Quarq Cinqo Saturn today. This is probably one of the few times I did not hesitate to drop over $1K to buy something.

Back Home

I finally got home Sunday around 9:30p. We had to drive through a wicked winter storm through North Carolina, Virginia and parts of WV. Todd and I saw so many cars on the side of the road.

Anyway, I'm super worn out and need a few days to recover. I slept in and skipped class (oops, that's 4 days in a row) but I wouldn't have really been too productive even if I did go. I have to take a make up exam tomorrow for the exam I skipped during camp and also getting my body fixed up with a massage.

I'll finish up a report on camp later
